A couple originally from Miami Beach, Florida, shares their move to An Thuong, Da Nang, Vietnam, after visiting 110 cities across Southeast Asia. Motivated by a multiple sclerosis diagnosis and a desire to travel while healthy, they put their careers as yacht brokers on hold. They pay $550 per month for a two-bedroom condo two and a half blocks from the beach, compared to $5,000 per month for housing in Miami. They prefer Da Nang over Hanoi, Hoi An (which they found too touristy), and all other destinations they visited, citing walkability, community feel, and affordability. The couple spends under $2,000 total per month on housing, food, wine, and shopping. They do not own a scooter and walk everywhere. They highlight An Thuong as a soft landing for Western expats while noting it still offers authentic Vietnamese culture. The interview was filmed at Scallywags, an expat-friendly venue on An Thuong Walking Street.
